Why this yoga style will work for you

Scaravelli Yoga?

What is it? How is it different from other approaches to yoga?

This yoga is unique in not being about getting into a particular pose or position. In fact the ambition to achieve a certain pose or posture is an obstacle to your doing this yoga in the spirit or way Vanda Scaravelli intended.

For Vanda, the yoga she developed and taught could begin only when all the pushing and pulling had come to an end. She taught that we have become so accustomed to forcing our bodies and demanding things from them that that’s the first thing we have to stop.

Try harder! Work harder! Push yourself harder! When we want to achieve things, this is our default position. But you do not need to push, pull or force your body into positions and poses. Rather, we need to learn how to listen to our bodies. We need to learn how to go with our bodies as opposed to battling them. We need to cease being cruel to our bodies and instead adopt a tender, loving and kind ...

In Vanda Scaravelli’s words, 'When we work with the body there is beauty, there is harmony'. For her the point of the yoga she developed was to help restore the body to health, vitality and energy. If you allow yourself to work with your body it will soon begin to respond by moving in ways you can’t imagine - till it happens

Vanda was not prescriptive; she didn’t even want to have this approach to yoga named after her. She thought that it was much bigger than her; bigger than any of us. That’s partly why she said you have to become your own student and your own teacher.

And that’s informed how I approach teaching. I’m here to work with you, not to force or discipline you. My aim is to help you to learn how to teach yourself. Let's begin.
